Synchronize IMAP folders for new accounts in Apple Mail
In the Show/Hide IMAP Folders dialog box, select a folder. To view the folder and download its contents, click Show. To hide the folder and prevent its contents from downloading, click Hide. Windows Live Mail. In order for IMAP to work correctly with Windows Live Mail, the settings are by default set to not assign mail folders correctly. In the Mail app on your Mac, do one of the following: Choose Mailbox Erase Deleted Items, then choose an account. In the Mail sidebar, Control-click a Trash mailbox, then choose Erase Deleted Items. You can set the “Erase deleted messages” option in Mail preferences to have Mail permanently erase deleted messages for you at a specified time.

This article describes how to synchronize IMAP folders after you set up a new account in Apple Mail. Because Apple Mail does not automatically synchronize IMAP folders, you must complete this process manually through folder mapping. Instructions for several Apple Mail version are included; select the version that applies to you:

Map IMAP folders in Sierra Apple Mail
Within the Mail app, select Mail > Preferences.
Select the Accounts tab at the top of the window, and then select your IMAP email account in the left pane.
Select the Mailbox Behaviors tab.
Click the Sent Mailbox menu, and select the Sent folder that is listed under your email (not the folder listed under On My Mac).
Click the Junk Mailbox menu, and select the Spam folder that is listed under your email (not the folder listed under On My Mac).
Click the Trash Mailbox menu, and select the Trash folder that is listed under your email (not the folder listed under On My Mac).

Map IMAP folders in El Capitan or Yosemite Apple Mail
Close all windows so that only your mailbox’s Inbox is open and visible.
Under your email account, click on the Sent folder (not the Sent folder with the paper airplane icon).
From the Mailbox menu, select Use This Mailbox As > Sent Mailbox.

Repeat steps 2 & 3 for the Junk/Spam and Trash folders.
