Important Notes

Camera Capture Download

For Windows or Mac computers that do not have a direct connection to the Internet, download the installation file to a local network folder, USB stick, or other portable media. Then, transfer the installation file onto the hard drive of the local computer prior to running the installation program.

Important notes that apply to software Installations for USB-based cameras on Windows platforms:

  1. Ensure that you choose the option to Save the installation file to your local computer.
  2. DO NOT use the option to Run the install from the browser.
  3. Disconnect the camera’s USB cable (and external power, if used).
  4. Log into the PC with an Account that has full Administrator privileges.
  5. Execute the installation file using a right-mouse click, choosing the option Run as Administrator from the menu.
  6. If a previous version of the software is detected, the installation script will advise you that it will be uninstalled. It may be necessary to re-launch the installation program a second time, following the un-install, if the process does not resume automatically. You may also uninstall the previous version of the software manually before proceeding with the installation of the newer version, but you will need to reboot your computer (if prompted) to ensure that you do not experience difficulties with future software upgrades.
  7. If you receive an error message when downloading your software or driver file and you are using IE as a browser, we recommend switching to another browser and then trying your download again. Recommended browsers: Firefox or Chrome.

USB Video Class (UVC) Cameras

Any USB Video Class (UVC) camera should work in Debut. Mac OS X has had native support for UVC devices since version 10.4.3. If a camera works in PhotoBooth, iChat or FaceTime out of the box, then it is most likely UVC compliant. Most new USB cameras are UVC devices.

Mac

Non-UVC Cameras

Debut is able to support some non-UVC cameras using an open-source driver named macam. A list of cameras supported by macam is available at http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/cameras/index.php.

To use a non-UVC camera in Debut:

  1. Download the latest macam disk image from http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/downloads.html.
  2. Double click the dmg file (e.g., macam.0.9.2.dmg) to see the contents in Finder.
  3. Launch Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities) and run the following command:
  4. Enter the administrator password when prompted.
  5. Quit Debut if it's already running.
  6. Connect the camera, launch Debut and press the Device toolbar button. The non-UVC camera should be automatically used if there are no other connected devices. Otherwise, it can be selected in Preferences -> Devices.

Video Capture Devices

Some USB video capture devices, such as the SIIG USB Video/Audio Capture Device (http://www.altoedge.com/video/siig-video-capture2.html), can be used in Debut. Third-party software is usually needed to make them work. For example, VideoGlide (http://www.echofx.com/videoglide.html).

FireWire Cameras

Cameras with a FireWire interface, such as DV cameras or Apple's iSight, can work in Debut. If a Firewire connected camera works in Photobooth, iChat or FaceTime then it should work in Debut just like a regular built-in or USB camera.
