Simple Income And Expense Software

Is it possible to change the Type after you’ve set up a Category?
I’ve just set up about 10 Categories and then realised not all of them should be Expense.
I’m using Quicken for Mac 2017

If you have not yet used the category, then find it in the list in the Categories window, double click it, and click the Income button to change to income.
If you've already used it, you can't change it from Expense to Income. If so, there are a couple of workarounds:
    1. Create a new income category with a slightly different name. Change all the transactions to the new category using menu File > Get Info to bulk change. Delete the now unused category and rename the newly created one. This won't work for split transactions though.
    2. Create a new income category and save it. Then rename the old expense category to be the same name as the new income category. Quicken will ask you if you want to merge. After the merge, rename the combined (now income) category as desired.

RickO, thanks so much. I'm really pleased that I posted this plea for advice and you saw it.
'If you have not yet used the category, .. '
Yes, good. About half have not been used yet.
'If so, there are a couple of workarounds: .. '
I'll try the first work-around i.e. '1. Create a new income category with a slightly different name.'
I would have never have known/figured this out on my own.
I'll let you know how I get on.

It is unfortunate that QMac does not allow this change. QM2007 allows for this change without consequence.
Of course, this is not something that should need to be done frequently at all but it would be nice to have the flexibility.

RickO, the sweat is beading on my brow right now as I try to carry out the changes I want!
    Yes, I have taken a back-up before I execute these changes ... :-)
'If you have not yet used the category, .. '
The double-click did not seem to work for me on the unused categories?
Instead, I clicked on the minus sign ' - ' icon at the bottom of the Categories screen
The box containing +v - (pencil icon) *V
That deleted a unused Expense category for me, fine. I can re-create it as an Income category later.
Is my deletion method safe, can you see any problems it may cause later?
    Thanks, Peter

Yes, deleting them that way is fine. In fact, if you click the gear icon at the bottom, there's an option to remove all unused categories in one fell swoop.

  • RickO, smayer97, just to let you know that I think I’ve fixed it.
I could not get Rick’s workarounds to work but no matter, I found another way of doing it which allowed me to delete the categories I created in error but which are now redundant.
Basically, I changed the name of the new category I created in error and posted to.
This caused the category to now show as “Unused”
I was then able to delete it.
Thanks again for your interest and support.
