Make a Flyer in Pages on the Mac
Mac Tip #543, 04 July 2012

Pages.app, part of the iWork suite of apps, is a very handy piece of software. It opens and saves to Word, but is also perfect for making flyers, invitations, certificates and more. This Tip shows how to use and adapt the Flyer template.

Pages.app costs US$19.99 (NZ$24.99) from the App Store, and is part of the iWork productivity suite that includes Numbers (for spreadsheets) and Keynote (for presentations).

Quick Start

  1. Choose a template from the Template Chooser.
  2. Click once on text to select the object, then click again to select the text.
  3. Type new text to replace the placeholder text.
  4. Drag an image from the Media viewer onto the existing image to replace it.
  5. The text in the tear-off tabs automatically rotates so you can easily type over it.

Choose a Template

When you open Pages the Template Chooser appears. If you already have a document open and want to see the Template Chooser select Open Template Chooser… from the File menu.

The Template Chooser in Pages. I’ve selected the Flyers category under Page Layout on the left.

Pages ’09 offers several Flyers templates. In the Tip I use the Learn Guitar Flyer template.

Click on a template to select it and click the Choose button at the bottom of the window. A document opens with images and text already filled in, ready to be replaced.

Selecting may take two clicks

The text and images in the flyer template are just waiting to be replaced. Because this is a template it doesn’t work quite the same as in a normal document.

I want to replace the words Learn Guitar with Learn Mac.

To do that I click once on the words Learn Guitar. An outline box appears around that whole section of text. Now I click once again on the words Learn Guitar. This time the words themselves are selected. To replace them I just start typing.

Double click is a handy shortcut for these two clicks.

I replaced Learn Guitar with Learn Mac. Currently that section has an outline box around it.

Work through each section of text in this way, replacing the placeholder text with your own.

How the tear-off tabs at the bottom work

The text in the tear-off tabs rotates so you can more easily edit it. Left: while editing. Right: after.

You may think there will be a problem with the tear-off tabs at the bottom because they’ve been rotated. Pages is smart though. Click once on a tab to select the text box, then click once on the text itself. After that second click the text rotates, making it easier for you to type in your own wording.

Start by getting the text in one tab correct, then copy and paste to each of the other tabs in turn.

After editing the first tab type Command (⌘) A to Select All then Command (⌘) C to Copy. Then for every other tab double click, type Command (⌘) A to Select All then Command (⌘) P to Paste.

Change the picture

The template includes a photo, in my case of a guitar. Click once on the image to select it.

Then go to the View menu and choose Show Media Browser. A floating window appears, showing your iPhoto and Aperture collections.

Make sure the Photos tab is selected, rather than Audio or Movies.

Find a suitable images in your Aperture or iPhoto collections. I have a photo of some Macs selected. Note that the guitar image has a selection box around it, so when I drag my photo in the guitar will be replaced.

Mac Apps For Creating Flyers

Browse your photo collection: scroll around in the image browser until you find a suitable photo, or use the Search field at the bottom to narrow down the choices.

When you find a suitable picture drag it over on top of the placeholder photo in the template. Your image is resized if necessary and replaces the image that was there previously.

When you’ve finished, either click the Close control on the Media Browser or go to the View menu and choose Hide Media Browser.

Save the new flyer

The next steps are to save the flyer, print it and distribute it. Good luck.

Pages.app can do plenty more

There are all kinds of things you can do to make your flyer stand out from all the others on the noticeboard, but that’s for future Tips.

Pages is a very nice app to work with. If you haven’t considered buying it and you’re interested in making flyers, posters, invitations, certificates and the like then give it a try.

I can’t speak to the US prices, but I see from an earlier article I posted on KnowIT — Apple’s Pages Demystified — that the New Zealand price is now only 1/6th what it was 6 years ago. That’s a huge drop and really makes the app affordable.

iA Writer

iA Writer's gone through quite a few changes over the years. Where the previous Pro app tried to break down your writing into a flow between notes and writing and editing, the modern iA Writer focuses on having your write in plain text, with full Markdown support. That's not to say that there aren't advanced features, however, as there are quite a few. Syntax Control breaks down your writing to show you the structure, highlighting adjectives, nouns, conjunctions, and more. Link to other documents in iA Writer to combine them into a single project, or link to images or spreadsheet files to see them in iA Writer's Preview screen in a number of different templates.

Like other apps on this list, iA Writer lets you publish to blogs, in this case, WordPress and Medium. You can also export your work in Markdown, PDF, HTML, and Microsoft Word.

Scrivener

Scrivener is nothing short of a full-featured suite of tools for writers. Novels, scripts, essays, research papers, it doesn't matter, because Scrivener supports all of them. Organize your ideas on digital notecards and lay them out on the corkboard to see how your work fits together. Import images, PDF and other media you've used as research to refer to it later. Keep your work segmented for easier organization and edition, while maintaining its structure with the Binder. And each part of the app can be customized to create the exact writing environment that you need. It's actually hard to encapsulate just how many options Scrivener gives you.

When you're done, compile your project into a single document, and export in formats like DOC, rich text, PDF, ePub, Kindle, and even export for other apps like Final Draft. Away from your Mac? You can also check out Scrivener for iPhone and iPad, which lets you work on your Scrivener projects no matter where you are.

Blogo is a standout amongst our selections here because while many of these apps allow you to publish to the web, that's Blogo's explicit purpose. Open up Blogo and sign in to your WordPress, Blogger, or Medium account and start writing those hot takes. Manage everything from your post's title to its tags, preview your posts, and images. While Blogo is free up front, you can subscribe to Blogo Pro for $2.99 per month (or $24.99 for a year) to get access to more advanced features. You'll be able to add as many accounts as you want, get access to the Media Search feature to easily find videos, images, GIFs, and more, and on certain accounts, you can even moderate and reply to comments.

Bear

A relatively new app compared to the rest of the list, Bear might seem simple, but it offers a great deal of flexibility for handling text. It's true that Bear is good for both notes and todo checklists, but it's support for Markdown, a variety of themes, and simple organization makes it a great tool for many different kinds of writing. Add images, files, code blocks, and more to spice up your work and give it more context.

In terms of options, you've got few. Choose how to sort your documents, pick a theme, pick your font, and even control fine-grain details such as font size, line height and width, and paragraph spacing. Subscribe to Bear Pro for $1.49 per month in order to sync your documents between Bear for Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Oct 11, 2019  How to Run 32-Bit Apps in macOS Catalina. Apple's latest version of macOS, Catalina, officially ditches 32-bit app support, but you can still run the software you need by following these steps. Why isn't mac supporting 32 bit software. Nov 15, 2019  System Information can find 32-bit apps that are installed on your Mac: Choose Apple menu About This Mac, then click the System Report button. Select Legacy Software in the sidebar. All legacy software is 32-bit. If you don't see Legacy Software in the sidebar, select Applications in the sidebar, then check the list of apps on the right. According to your Techteam Camtasia is still a 32 bit program. Please do correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Apple providing 64 bit capable iMacs since late 2006?
